Excellent 4 hands duet of Piazzolla’s Libertango, one of my favourite pieces. This arrangement was composed by the 2 pianists in the video. It must have taken them a lot of hardwork and coordination. Beautifully in sync and I love the way the express the passion in this piece. Piano genius indeed!

Recognize her?

Tyra Banks, retired supermodel

If you don’t, then you’ve probably been living under a rock.

Tyra Banks, supermodel-turned-media mogul, has risen to become probably one of the most recognizable faces on television in the last few years with the rising popularity of the reality television series, America’s Next Top Model (ANTM), co-produced and hosted by Banks herself.

ANTM Cycle 10 cast

ANTM Cycle 10 cast

As the brainchild of a person who has spent nearly half of her life strutting down runways and posing for photo shoots, the show, naturally, revolves around her life passion – modeling. The series, as its name suggests, is a competition which main aim is to provide a stepping stone for the contestants to break into the modeling industry, and, hopefully, find the next new face of the fashion world. Every cycle, 13 to 14 girls are chosen, out of a pool of applicants from all over the country, to compete on the show, where they are required to live together and compete with each other over a period of 13 weeks for the coveted title of America’s Next Top Model.

Over time, the show has been bashed by harsh critics as an ‘unrealistic portrayal’ of the actual industry and how it never fails to embarrass the girls on the judging panel and during shoots. As an avid follower of the series, I cannot deny that some of the critiques given to the contestants are indeed overly harsh, since Tyra and Co. simply can’t stand keeping quiet for two seconds without commenting on some ‘un-model-ly’ aspect of the girls. However, I do feel that some of the critiques, too, are a bit too harsh on the show. Here are a few reasons why:

1. “Unrealistic portrayal”

Before we start cringing and going “OMG! Are they for real??!!” at the things that go on in the series, let’s face the facts – how many of us have actually BEEN a model? Or even known one or have been a part of the industry? For the average person, a taking a photograph ends after ‘stand, smile and do a cheesy pose’; for models, getting a good photograph means spending hour after hour taking countless photographs just to get that one shot that says it all.

For most of us, who live comfortably in ignorance, watching television at home, we do not know much, if any, about the workings or hardships of the modeling world. We do not have the experience or knowledge to base our judgments. And precisely because we know nothing about modeling, it is hence easy for us to make assumptions based on our abysmal expertise with taking photographs. The same goes for many of the critics who have bashed the show. Not many of them have actually been models, which is why they can condemn the show so easily – because they think you can only go so far to get a good picture.

2. ‘Top Model’? Haven’t seen any.

Giselle Bundchen, highest-paid model in the world

Giselle Bundchen, highest-paid model in the world

To those who say that the show hasn’t produced any notably recognizable faces, I’d like to ask a question: how many magazines are there out there that actually feature fashion spreads as a main? After the 90s, models have gradually gone into obscurity as celebrities started ruling the cover pages and ad campaigns. The general trend now is that celebrities are focal point of the public’s attention. Whether on ad billboards, fashion spreads or cover pages, faces of celebrities are everywhere. The tide has turned and the world now focuses much more on celebrities than on models. Celebrities, not models, are now the new icon of what’s ‘in’ and what’s not. Even fashion brands are turning towards celebrities to help them market their products. With so little attention bestowed upon them, how are models to ever see the light of day?

3. ‘Reality T.V.’

There is a saying ‘Money makes the world go round’. In our modern society, money is the basis for everything we do – we study, work and do just about everything for the sake of earning that buck for our living. So television show producers, whose earnings are in direct proportion to the popularity of their shows, would naturally create their shows to suit the preference of their audience. Many critics accuse ANTM for ‘exaggerating the conflicts in the Top Model house’. The reason for that is very simple: Because conflict sells. Just take a look through the lists of the highest grossing movies. Many of them are shows heavily packed with fighting scenes or oriented around some conflict or the other. And if violence and conflict are what the audience desire, the producers will happily give it to them – because so long as their ratings soar, their wallets will remain nice and fat, which is by no means a bad thing. So who exactly then, is to blame for all of the ‘un-reality’ in the show?

It has been advised time and time again, that the media is not an accurate reflection of real life and viewers should remain objective to whatever they see on-screen. So critics, too, should take a step back to think –and consider whether they have truly discarded their bias and assumptions–, before getting all vocal and ranting about how T.V. is becoming visual trash.

All in all, what goes on on television is just that. A last word to all who still cringe upon seeing the exaggerated stuff on television: Take a break, have a Kit-kat. Come back, and take everything with a pinch of salt.

After all, how real can you get when you’re under the scrutiny of a camera –that broadcasts on national television, no less– 24/7?

Food for thought. Why are some people considered child prodigies while others aren’t?

Will the arts and culture of Singapore continue to thrive or collapse completely in the next 50 years? Is there a future for Singapore’s arts and culture?

After interviewing a few people in the arts scene like the winner of the National Arts Council Young Artist Award in 2006, Pianist Lim Yan and the General Manager of Singapore Lyric Opera, (the only Opera company in Singapore) Miss Ng Siew Eng, I’ve come to the conclusion that yes, the arts and culture will continue to thrive and flourish in Singapore for the next 50 years.

Things that were not possible ten years ago and did not exist, exists in Singapore now. Ten years ago, we did not have a world-class concert hall to stage performances, only the old and run-down Victoria Concert Hall. Now, we have the beautiful Esplanade which features a world-class concert hall designed by some of the world’s top accousticians.

Singapore also has schools specially set up to nurture the country’s aspiring talents. Schools such as Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Laselle College of The Arts, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Musci and the School Of The Arts have world-renowned faculty members who take Young artists under their wings and teach them the secret of the trade. This shows the support of the Singapore government towards the arts community though little funding may be granted to individual organisations.

Singapore also has a large pool of talents and child prodigies. Violinists such as Kam Ning, Min Lee, Vanessa Mae and Siow Lee Chin have gone on to conquer the world stage. Prodigies such as Abigail Sin and NAFA’s Valedictorian Jeremy Wong, will ensure that the arts legacy lives on in Singapore.

Hot pants and boy shorts

Shorts have yet to become shorter in this year’s spring trends, with hem lines shrinking to predominantly negative figures. Lingerie as outerwear has risen in popularity so it’s not much of a surprise for hot pants to be on the street this season. This style was also featured on the catwalks early this year. Again, they appeared in the front row. Again, they were illustrated on the confident individuality. Yet again, they were always on a stunning figure.

However, I feel that somehow, this trend will not be popular in Singapore. Yes, in sunny Singapore, people wear shorts but no way are the hemlines going to mount that high. Those who are not assertive of their figure will not be caught wearing hot pants on the streets either. Anyway, hot pants show a lot of skin and being conservative Singaporeans, it will not be likely for hometown folks to don this outfit. With the short hemline, this staple shows off your bum, so you got to have the body for hot pants, unless you happen to be Gisele Bundchen or Megan Fox. (:

Boy shorts are an inspiration from boy shorts knickers. It is similar to hot pants but differentiated by the hemline which does not curve up. Boy shorts may be an alternative to hot pants if you find it too revealing. Although boy shorts look less divulging, hometown folks will still shun this trend, the reason being that the excessively short hemlines are too skimpy and bold to be worn here.

Boyfriend blazers

The boyfriend blazer looks sophisticated and stylish at the same time. Boyfriend fashion trends have hit it big time in the fashion world. The style is about wearing oversized clothes to look as if they were stolen from the boyfriend’s closet. The key is to go up only one size so the blazer will not swallow you. The boyfriend blazer is also proficient at accentuating shoulders. Rolling up the sleeves of the blazers is also another crucial point as exposing the wrist makes the look more feminine. This item can also be worn to work since it appears classy and mature.

Patched jeans

Ripped jeans made a statement in autumn and fall 2009. Now that its spring again, jeans are all patched up. We welcome jeans in 2010. This trend will definitely grow well into the year. Patched jeans are not very common in Singapore, neither are ripped jeans. Both jean styles imply the rocker chick look and are mostly worn by teenagers. This staple is more widespread in western countries such as America where jeans are a common wardrobe piece. Someday, patched jeans WILL be a fashion rage among Singaporeans. At least, that’s what I hope.

HELLO!

I think lady gaga would be appealing to the masses hence I should post her song Speechless from the album THE FAME MONSTER. Though this song has been out for quite a period , it is a very meaningful song hence I think I should comment on it:D

Speechless is a song that I think LADY GAGA put her emotions in it to the fullest. A pity could be that there is no music video for this song  or else I think it will be able to add more meaning to the song! The starting of the song starts with a hit not soothing music since it is from LADY GAGA:) I love her voice in this song. Her singing has indeed improved a great deal from her first album THE FAME.

Her vocals seemed to be able to ‘stretch’ a wide range for this song especially at the ending part(last chorus). Her lyrics are decent in this song:) I like her chorus as it is simple yet it brings out the despair of being speechless(the feeling that nothing could be said/too sad). Her lyrics are interesting too.

First chorus
Ill never talk again
Oh boy youve left me speechless
Youve left me speechless, so speechless

second chorus
I’ll never love again
Oh friend youve left me speechless
Youve left me speechless, so speechless

Notice the difference, the first part is oh boy yet the second one is oh friend. This is because at the first part, it only means that she is not going to talk again and that the person who causes her not to talk is just a boy(no special relationship). However, in the second part, she is not going to love again, it means that her boyfriend/lover has become only a friend.

The meaningful meaning behind this song

The song was written to convince Gaga’s father to undergo open heart surgery to repair a malfunctioning aortic valve, and as a reminder for her younger fans to appreciate their parents. I think she is cool as she is a public figure and she is using her songs to educate her fans to do the right things:D Seriously, you hardly see many singers doing that right?

Remembered that I watched one of her interviews on youtube, she said that she felt like a freak when she was in her teens and that she wanted her fans to be free of their own fears and find their own space in the earth.I thought that it was really shocking to hear such a statement from a very popular singer!

In this year, 2010 will feature a variety of new hair style trends such as pixie crops and slicked back looks. The latest hair trend is heavily influenced by the recent Spring 2010 catwalks and advancements of the previous year’s trend. I think the three best hair styles are the side braided hair, lengthy waved hair and the top knot.

 The side braid

Also known as the milkman braid, it has evolved into the plaited style this year. It is predominantly prominent on Alexander Wang’s runway, and Miuccia Prada’s Miu Miu Spring 2010 and also progressively more amongst street style photos.

I think that the side braid is a sweet and simple style with an edgy cut to it. It is a certainly a twist from the typical long plaited hair and I feel that it is ideal for fans of the street style. The hairstyle looks great with a fringe, especially with a loosely styled side part fringe. This trendy look works well with raging street wear.

Waved hair

The long waved hair is inspired by the 1940s and will continue in 2010. It has a slight pin up look and brings out the femininity of a lady visibly. The waves of this hair style are firm but not curly and looksdistinct with most hair colours except black. Classic styling of clothes and makeup will complete the timeless 1940s look.

The top knot

The top knot expresses a youthful and teasing look. It is popular because it looks good on most people and it is easy to style without so much of a hassle. Again, it is mostly a street style and this year, it features the sleek and messy top knot. The bun can sit dead center on top of the head or slightly off to the side, in which either ways are fine. Tops knots work better on straight hair.

I think that this style is perfect for ladies who dislike the bother of hair styling. Skip your morning routine – without looking like you did! This pretty and fast idea will keep you looking stylish when you want to fast-track your updo. Simply twist your hair up super-high and make it look perfectly wispy.

The movie is an adaptation of the comic book written by Jeff Kinney. The story centers around the life of a middle school boy named Greg Heffley. I must say the characters in the movie look nothing like the characters depicted in the book with the exception of Greg’s best friend, Rowley Jefferson. Both characters in the book and the movie resembled each other.

Rowley and Greg Heffley in the movie
Rowley Jefferson in the comic book

Greg Heffley in both the comic book and the movie

The characters in the movie are definitely more good-looking than those in the comic books. The 2 people who in my opinion, look the most different from the characters drawn in the book are Greg’s parents.

Mrs Heffley. A.K.A Susan Heffley

Mr Heffley (Dad) A.K.A Frank Heffley

And of course, my favourite character in the entire movie *drum roll*

Greg's brother. Rodrick Heffley!!!

Overall, the movie failed to meet my expectations but it isn’t a complete flop either. It just got a little monotonous and the jokes didn’t seem as funny. I think the book is much more interesting and the jokes when read, seem funnier. Because the characters in the movie looked so different from those in the comic, I couldn’t relate to them and hence, didn’t really enjoy the movie but if you are one who watches movie because of a good-looking cast, then you should definitely catch this movie. Overall, the acting skills of the actors were average enough to bore me yet they weren’t bad enough to make me storm out of the theatre. This is just an average movie with actors whose acting skills are average. I strongly recommend you, my dear readers, to read the book instead of watch the movie.

The ocean itself is a mysterious place filled with deep dark secrets, waiting to be discovered. This is true, especially in Taiji, Japan.

‘The Cove’ is an Oscar-winning documentary which tells us all about the brutal dolphin slaughter in a small fishing village in Taiji. This documentary is not like the other typical documentaries that are loaded with endless information. This documentary is one that is filled with tons of raw emotions and it definitely tugs at the heartstrings.

In the documentary, we see Ric O’ Barry, an anti-dolphin activist, struggling to capture photos and videos of the ‘bloodbath’ of the cove in the fishing village in Taiji. The ‘bloodbath’ refers to the bright crimson blood which colours the ocean every morning, during the dolphin-hunting period. Struggling dolphins would then attempt to escape from this bloody mess, but to no avail.

Ric O' Barry, probably one of the guys with the biggest heart ever :')

The horrifying, shocking bloodbath

Yes, one can expect to see such a gory scene in ‘The Cove’. But to me, that is not the worst scene. There is this particular scene which shows a dying baby dolphin swimming towards two divers (from the activist team). The dolphin seemed to know that it will not be able to escape successfully from the inhumane fishermen but still, it swam towards the divers, as if wanting to tell them “Save me, stop this.”

I must say that ‘The Cove’ is really amazing in every single way. It has the plot, the props (High technology, state of the art equipments used), the suspense, the thriller, the emotions. How many movies/documentaries have actually left a huge impact on you? Have you ever watched a movie/documentary which made you felt like changing the world, changing the perspectives of some other people? Well, after watching ‘The Cove’ you definitely would. I hope that all of our readers out there would just take a few hours off on a Saturday/Sunday, ditch your studies or work to watch this documentary. Watching this documentary allowed me to take a step back and it gave me a broader perspective of what is happening in the world. In the beginning I thought that everything in ‘The Cove” was a fake. I thought to myself, “If this was real, then why isn’t the government doing anything to stop the dolphin slaughter?” But the images in this film were too real, too vivid. The dolphin slaughter shocked me and it brought tears to my eyes.

Some of you might find that the scenes this film is too gory and horrifying. But really, do not allow your fears to be one of the reasons why the dolphin species may be extinct in the future. I trust that you will never ever regret watching ‘The Cove’. It has left a huge impact on me and I am sure for you, it will too.

This is the ugly truth that is happening in Taiji. We need to let out this horrifying secret (of the Taiji fishermen) to the Japanese, to the whole world.

If your friends do not know about all these dolphin-slaughters going around, spread the word to them. Even if it is one individual, it does not matter. Because every step you take, will determine the survival of the dolphins.

Think: There might be a day, when these beautiful sea creatures would never exist on earth anymore.

Personally, I did quite a number of researches about dolphins and how we can save them etc. Here are some websites that may interest you:

Every step you take will determine the survival of the dolphins in the world. Lets protect Mother Nature and prevent it from being destroyed in the hands of the evil.

Save the dolphins, stop this.
