The ABRSM Exam season is here once again. It’s the time of the year when everyone gets very stressed out with some not being able to withstand the pressure.

ABRSM stands for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music which includes schools like the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. The exams are held twice a year once during the feb/mar/april period and once during the sept/oct period.

There are 2 types of exams. One is Practical exam and the other one is Theory exam. You can take the Practical exam for any instrument that you wish to however you will need at least a Grade 5 in theory before you are allowed to take Grade 6 in practical.

There are a few components in the Practical exam. Candidates are required to play 3 prepared pieces. There will be sight-reading tests, scales & arpeggios test and aural test.

The reason why I’m talking about ABRSM exams is because I’m taking my Violin practical in two days time, this coming Wednesday. All the best to everyone who is going to take their Practical or theory exam during the summer season of the ABRSM exams 😀

Fashion dominates the world. Without it, the world is dull and the significance of individuality vanishes. Human beings had created a vast variety of fashion and it has evolved constantly. Fashion trends never stop. Even at this moment, it is still changing. Let us take a look at the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s fashion and how it has advanced to the styles of the present.

The 1960’s had a diverse mode of fashion. The sixties was an era with exciting fashion ideas and huge fashion statements. However, they were also conservative and feminine. Gloves were worn for evening and social occasions too. Floral prints and the invention of miniskirts created a rage at that time. Floral prints could be seen everywhere, especially daisy prints, on dresses and on skirts. The polka dots were also quite trendy in that phase. Dresses worn were either swing, pleated or pencil skirts. The hues of the dresses were usually bright and bold such as blue, orange, yellow and pink. That is what I liked most about the sixties vogue. The vibrant colours on their clothes can really perk up anyone’s mood!

The sixties fashion carried off into the seventies. Trousers began to flare into bell-shaped bottoms and halter necked dresses were a hit. Disco became very popular during that period. People wore clothes in shiny colours like metallic gold and silver when going to a disco. Hot stretch disco pants and sequined tops were commonly seen at disco zones. Basically, disco attire includes stretch clothes and materials that reflect light and sparkle under disco lights. For evening wear, full length maxi dresses and halter necks were in the trend. I personally love the sequined tops (ooh, shiny!). They are indeed very eye-catching and it certainly sets the right mood for some disco dancing.

The 1980’s fashion was unforgettable and pretty conspicuous. Women in that era felt that they could finally make a powerful statement with the strong shoulder trend. The strong padded shoulder tops instantly toughens up any woman. The eighties fashion was more of a tailored look. They usually wore jackets when going out to tie in with the tailored style. Perhaps, the wide shoulder tops suggest that all women can be anyone she desires and have no boundaries. That was probably one of the reasons why shoulder pads were so fashionable among women in the eighties. People also loved to accessorize in the 1980s.The well-loved large square scarves can indeed beautify any outfit when in fine wool or synthetic acrylic. There were many exotic patterns and vivid flowery motifs on the scarves. The unique shawls were draped around woman’s shoulders to give a polished overall look.

The rise of the scarves has returned in 2010. They are back with more fresh and striking patterns on the scarves, as well as coming in all lengths and shapes. They can even be worn around the head like a headband. I feel that in Singapore, possessing a scarf should be chiefly for style since it is HOT all year round and having a scarf wrapped around the neck is not practical. However, they can be saved for a rainy day or unusually cold weather. Looking chic and protecting oneself from cold is an advantage. (:

That pretty much sums up the fashion trends in the sixties, seventies and eighties. I hope that the styles of the past inspire you as much as they inspire me.
